The highlights of our 2022 Dragon Boat Race at Port Edgar Marina

On Saturday 20 August, seven teams lined up on the banks of the River Forth, at Port Edgar Marina, to go head-to-head in our oar-some Dragon Boat Race! Back for 2022, we were delighted to see the return of this high-octane team challenge, which welcomed back teams from BlackRock, The Wave Project and the Hospice!

Fun Fact: The Hospice’s ‘Cheeky Chefs’ team included Community Fundraiser Diane Ewart, who recently competed at the World Rowing Championships!

The teams were;

  • BlackRock, represented by Team BlackSocks
  • Adobe, represented by Team Adobe’s Ark
  • Citibank, represented by Team Dragonciti
  • Thornton’s Solicitors, represented by Team Thorny Dragons
  • The Wave Project, represented by Teams Barry’s Wave Project Crushers & Wave Garden Scotland Kahunas
  • The Hospice represented by Team Cheeky Chefs, racing in memory of Paul Walker, the former Head Chef at the Hospice, who died of cancer in April.

Despite kicking off the day with some challenging weather conditions, participants and spectators alike got well and truly into the spirit of things, cheering on all the races, and generating a fantastic atmosphere. Gail Riding, Staff Nurse with the Hospice Access Team, remarked after the event:

“I thought it would just be a bit of fun, but I was amazed how competitive I got, once I was in the boat, I really wanted to win!”

Over the course of 2 heats, and a grand final, it was the team from the Wave Project, named ‘Wave Garden Scotland Kahunas’, that came out on top, finishing their last race in under a minute!!

The Cheeky Chefs took home the prize for best outfit, and the Thorny Dragons were the deserved recipients of the best name prize!

Amanda Southey, our Corporate Development Manager, said;

“Today was a really fun event, it was great to see all the teams, as well as members of the public, pull together to raise money and support the Hospice in such a unique way. I’m also excited that several of today’s competitors enjoyed it so much they have signed up for next year, which is already set to be bigger and better than ever! I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who helped or took part, and a special congratulations to The Wave Project, who were our very worthy winners!”
