Patient Services"The role of the Hospice in modern times is to remind us that any act of caring enriches the life of the person giving and the life of the person receiving – a basic truth that is all too often overlooked in our materialistic world."
OriginsSt Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh, opened in 1977 as a 15-bed unit in Challenger Lodge, an original Georgian building overlooking the Firth of Forth. It has developed and expanded since then to provide a modern, comprehensive range of care services within its much-extended buildings and in the wider community. CommitmentWhat has not changed is our commitment to provide free, high quality care to all those who need it, and to do so with compassion, honesty and integrity. At St Columba's, every patient is treated with dignity and their wishes are respected. An individual care programme is devised to meet particular needs and each patient is encouraged to participate in preparing it. We strive to keep patients informed of the progress of their illness in a sensitive and honest manner, recognising that each individual may have a different understanding of their disease. The care is delivered by a highly skilled, multi-professional team whose task is to create an environment of mutual respect between all of the staff and those in their care. ChaplaincyWe are all too aware that emotional and spiritual needs must be addressed at this time too. The Chaplaincy service is available for everyone connected with the Hospice. The Chaplaincy team offers spiritual care to everyone and makes sure religious care is available to all who wish it, whatever their faith or background may be. And the beautiful chapel at St Columba's is always open, providing space for quiet reflection. St Columba's is an independent unit operating as a charity (Regd.
