We are currently advertising for the following positions;


Medical Research Fellow

Salary: £39,846 to £74,304, pro-rata per annum, (dependent on experience)

Hours: Part-time: 8 PAs: 6 research and 2 clinical

Tenure: Fixed term for 2 years.

Applications are invited for this exciting new opportunity to join the research team at St Columba’s Hospice, where you will help develop the palliative care evidence base by helping to lead 2 research studies in the area of palliative care rehabilitation and nutrition.

The Hospice has made research a core strand of its 5 year strategy “Care and Compassion Matters” and the successful candidate will work alongside a small team with significant palliative care research experience. The post also includes a day a week of clinical work in outpatient and inpatient settings. It is expected that the postholder will attain a higher degree (MD) and that the research will lead to a variety of peer-reviewed publications.

As a Hospice we’re committed to delivering the highest standards of care to people with active, progressive, far advanced illness. St. Columba’s Hospice, a modern Specialist Palliative Care Unit, provides inpatient facilities for 30 patients, and has a growing community service, including Specialist Community Palliative Care, Day Services and outpatients, as well as the Centre for Education and Research.

Experience in Palliative Medicine is highly desirable but not essential, and applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, with a current licence to practise.

Fundraising Assistant

Salary: Band 3, £18,293 to £21,349 per annum + unsocial hours enhancement + Pension

Hours: Full-time: 37.5 hours per week

 This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to develop their career in fundraising. The Fundraising Assistant will work across the fundraising team providing support for the delivery of St Columba’s Hospice’s fundraising objectives. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator and will help steward individual donors and supporters as well as companies and organisations; accurately recording information on our donor database, supporting fundraising events, appeals and initiatives and dealing with general enquiries.

The post holder will have a varied workload which will include helping to advertise and market our events including through social media and undertaking administrative tasks.

The successful candidate will have experience of providing great customer service and have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.  You will be comfortable multi-tasking and prioritising your varied workload and have experience of working with a database.

Occasional working in the evenings and weekends is required in order to fulfil the duties of the post e.g. attending fundraising events.

Community Fundraiser

Maternity cover – 12 months

Salary: Band 4 £20,911 – £23,597 + unsocial hours enhancement + Pension

Hours: Full-time: 37.5 hours per week

The Community Fundraiser role is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated individual to continue to develop the opportunities for community support for St Columba’s Hospice. The community fundraiser will support the delivery of income through community activities and initiatives, as well as supporting voluntary groups such as tin collectors, speakers and action groups.  The post holder will engage and inspire those based in our local Edinburgh and the Lothians community to help our cause and will maintain and develop these relationships.

The post holder will have a varied workload and will maintain records on our supporter database, help to raise funds out in the community and undertake administrative tasks as and when required. The post holder will manage our community activity and initiatives, contributing to the overall team fundraising target.

Ideally you will have a community fundraising background, or experience in fundraising or a sales/marketing role. Counsellor

Salary: Band 6: £27,635 – £37,011 pro rata, per annum + Pension

Hours: Part-time: 20 hours per week

We are looking for an approachable, organised, motivated and compassionate counsellor to join our specialist Supportive Care Team.

Working with other counsellors and as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be instrumental in the development of counselling and bereavement support services at St Columba’s Hospice. Working with adults living with palliative care illness and facing end of life, as well as with their relatives and loved ones, you will be a registered, qualified and experienced counsellor, accredited by BACP or eligible for BACP accreditation, and will have specialist knowledge of illness, loss and bereavement. You will work well as part of a team, having excellent communication skills, and will enjoy being involved in the recruitment, training, support and supervision of volunteers.

Experience of providing counselling supervision, of working in a health care setting, and of offering time-limited counselling and group work would support your application.

Domestic Assistant

Salary: Band 1 £17,028 to 17,864 per annum, pro-rata to hours worked + unsocial premium + Pension                                   

Hours: Part-time: 22.50 hours per week over 5 days, Monday to Friday

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to join our friendly, hard-working team for a late shift (15:00-19:30). Domestic Assistant is an important member of the team who helps to provide a range of cleaning related duties across the hospice in a professional manner and to set procedures and high standards.

Cleaning experience is desirable although full training will be given. Responsibilities will include general cleaning tasks such as the disposal of refuse, high / low dusting, cleaning sanitary areas, wet mopping, cleaning of patient equipment, etc. Staff uniform will be provided.

The ability to work on you own initiative and as part of a team is essential as is having good communication skills and the ability to prioritise and organise the daily duties, whilst maintaining a professional approach at all times regardless of the situation.

Experience with cleaning equipment or working within a healthcare setting would be an advantage, as would knowledge of COSHH, manual handling and infection control, but this is not essential as full training will be provided.

Day Therapies Social Worker or Healthcare Professional

Band 6, £27,635 – £ 37,011 pro-rata, per annum + Pension

Part-time (22.5 hours per week. Tues, Thurs, Fri)

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Day Therapies team and we are looking for an experienced, creative and highly motivated Social Worker or Healthcare professional to join us.

The Day Therapies team at St Columba’s provide an early intervention model of proactive support for people living with a palliative care diagnosis at home.  The service offers regular individualised programmed interventions tailored to people’s needs, delivered by the multi-professional team and is built around people’s goals.

The aim of the service is to ensure that people are able to live as they choose, be where they want to be, and access the resources and services that they need, so that they can live as independently as possible for as long as they can.

This role will work as part of the Day Therapies team to help individuals to meet their own goals and to prepare for their and their families future. The successful candidate will provide practical social and emotional support both to the individual and those supporting them in the form of group sessions and 1:1 support.

This is a unique opportunity for the right person to join our innovative service at this crucial time.  You will be passionate about palliative and modern hospice care; have a sound understanding and experience of assessing and responding to psycho-social needs, both individually and in group settings; and if successful, will play a key role in helping people live well as they approach the end of their life.  We welcome applications from people with social work or healthcare qualifications and experience.
