Volunteering Vacancies at St Columba’s Hospice

Hospice Shops: Our shops raise vital funds to improve the lives of local people living with a terminal or life limiting condition. By volunteering in one of our eight shops across Edinburgh and the Lothian’s, you can be at the heart of our fundraising activities and make a real difference to your local community.
We are looking for help with all aspects of running a lively shop; from accepting and sorting donations, to creating stylish & eye catching window displays, to meeting and serving customers.
This is a great chance to meet new people, learn new skills and to be part of something very special.
All our Hospice shops are keen to hear from volunteers who can spare a few hours. You’ll find a list here. We welcome applications from those aged 16 and above in our shops.
Plant Whisperer: We are looking for volunteers who would like to help us keep St Columba’s Hospice looking beautiful by caring for our wide variety of indoor pot plants. No expertise needed, just an interest in horticulture. Times and days are flexible so if you would like to find out more, please get in touch.
Iona Café: Preparing, selling drinks and snacks in our in-house café to patients, families, staff and volunteers. You will be working largely unsupervised, so need to be confident and be able to pick up on the use of equipment quickly – sandwich toaster, coffee machine, till and credit card machine. The Iona Café is a haven for those visiting the Hospice. We welcome applicants age 18 and above.

Staff Café: preparing and selling (light) cooked breakfasts, lunches and snacks to our staff in our dedicated Staff Dining Room. You will be working largely unsupervised, so need to be confident and able to pick up on the use of equipment quickly – sandwich toaster, till and credit card machine. Working next to our Kitchen Staff, this café operates between the hours of 08:30-11:30am (breakfast) and 11:30am-2:30pm (lunch), Monday to Friday. We welcome applicants age 18 and above.
Ward Volunteers: Supporting the ward staff and offering patients fresh, iced water and also ensuring the patients surroundings are tidy. Applicants must be age 17 or above.

Drivers: Assisting patients to and/or from our Day Therapies service and also escorting patients to hospital appointments and home visits. Times and days vary and we are happy to offer a weekly, fortnightly or monthly opportunities.
We particularly welcome drivers from North, East and SW Edinburgh and East Lothian.
All drivers are subject to a PVG check and mandatory Manual Handling training.
Bucket Collection Volunteers: We are looking for outgoing friendly people to help us with bucket collections at a variety of locations across Edinburgh and East Lothian. These collections help us to raise both funds and awareness for St Columba’s Hospice. This is a very flexible way to support your local Hospice, you can choose which collections to volunteer at and most collections take place over the weekend.
Tin Collectors: We are also looking for volunteer tin collectors. Its a great way to support your local Hospice while meeting people in your community. You will look after outlets within your local area at a time that suits you. We ask that you check outlets every 2-4 months, bringing in any full tins into the Hospice or one of our charity shops. We are currently looking for tin collectors in the following areas: Cramond, Easter Road, Dalkeith Road, top of Leith Walk / Elm Row and Leith.
Fundraising Event Support: We are always looking for people who can help us run our hospice-organised fundraising events. We rely on volunteers to help us deliver fun and exciting events for our supporters to take part in. Events volunteers take on tasks such as registering people as they arrive at an event, marshalling walks or runs, staffing checkpoints and helping with refreshments.
