The Hospice welcomes volunteers in a variety of roles, from chaplains to florists. This is a small snapshot of what our volunteers do for us.
We have a wide range of regular volunteering opportunities, working on a rota. These are useful if you want to plan your volunteering around other activities. These roles include:
Our Reception is manned by volunteers from 9am-8.30pm, 7 days a week.
Our Café is open to patients, families, staff and the public, providing a range of snacks and drinks from 8.30am – 8.30pm. Volunteers are responsible for staffing this café.
This Café provides an area for staff to relax and provides breakfast and lunch. It is staffed by volunteers from morning to early afternoon.
Every morning, a team of skilled flower arrangers provides beautiful flower arrangements to welcome patients and visitors to the Hospice. During the afternoon other members of the flower team will check that all our patients have flowers in their rooms, and make sure that any flowers from visitors are arranged in vases for our patients.
Our Ward Volunteers are on duty morning, afternoon and evening, ensuring that all our patients have fresh water in their rooms; alongside them, our Ward Assistants provide social support for patients, and clerical support for our Ward teams.
We have a number of shops across Edinburgh, all supported by volunteers who sort stock, keep displays topped up, and man our tills.
We also have a range of more ad hoc volunteering opportunities, including:
Our volunteer drivers provide a transport service for patients using our Day Service and Out Patient Service. They also occasionally provide transport for In Patient Unit patients to hospital appointments, and can be asked to bring in visitors.
We have a number of volunteers with strong computer skills providing administrative and clerical support to a range of teams across the Hospice.
We have a large garden, which needs planting and maintaining. We are now building up a team to do this! We also have a small team of volunteers who maintain the plants inside the Hospice.
Professional skills support
Some volunteers bring their professional skills to support our work. These include:
- Bereavement Counsellors
- Complementary Therapists
- Retail volunteers – anyone with a background in valuing (e.g. books, clothes, antiques, china, jewellery) can help us.
